Tea tasters are professional individuals who have knowledge about different tea and who specialize in the art of checking, tasting, sampling and differentiating tea based on labeling. There is wide scope for this profession in India since India is a world leader in producing a variety of tea. Professionals in this arena can taste more than 1500 varieties of tea.
Tea tasters can find employment at tea broking house, manufacturing companies, tea board of India, associations and sole buyers. Age is not the limit in this profession. With the experience, they can take up teaching assignments and research work with the manufacturing giants. Trainees get up to 10000 rupees a month and with experience, salaries can go up to 50000 per month too.
Some prerequisite attributes are: sharp tasting and smelling sense, very good observation power, good knowledge in tea leaves farming, good interpersonal behavior, self-disciplined and must restrict himself from consuming drinks and cigarettes. He should be well organized, hard worker, good at marketing and management. One should be a leader in case he is employed in a manufacturing company.
Education qualification is not necessary to get into this profession. Though basic education of 10+2 should be completed and the candidate must be between the ages of 18 to 25 for entering into this field. Bachelor degree in food science, agriculture, horticulture is profitable in future perspective. One can go for a diploma or postgraduate course in tea tasting. It is only after industrial training and experience; one can identify different tea by their smell, taste, brew, and leaves.
Merits and Demerits
One of the main advantages of this profession is that age is no bar. This career option is not opted by many and thus one can look for it as it offers good remuneration, perks, and incentives. Some negatives include dietary restriction because the mouth needs to remain clean for the tasting purpose. One needs to travel a lot and stay away from home until the assignment gets completed.
